GS Turn Sequence on Skates

Tyler shot a really great sequence of Danny this morning.
There is a lot we can learn from this photo and apply to our skiing this winter. Although it is not an exact translation from skates to skis, if you focus on body position it can be very beneficial moving into the winter. We worked with the campers today on just that, body awareness, and positioning especially at the top of the turn. Through out the week we have repeatedly asked the campers to work on their basic athletic stance. That position is very powerful and balanced. Starting from the first photo Danny makes a great move back to this strong position, he is square and balanced, his body is in a position that will allow him to react to changes in terrain or snow conditions. His weight is centered over his body and he will be able to pressure his outside ski with room above the gate, which will allow him to bring shape back to the gate, and have his turn done at the gate, rather then below the gate. In the last photo you can see him exiting his turn, releasing in the fall line and making sure his is back in his good square position.

We love talking skiing, Danny and I are always looking of ways to get our campers exposed to the best possible coaching during this camp. Sessions like today at the Stowe Parking lot left the kids with a 2.5 hour session filled with ski racing talk, coaching, and encouragement. It was a pretty special time, and I think a lot of kids were able to benefit a lot from this today.

Thanks,

-M
