Last Night

Last night at camp and it was definitely a good time. The rain cleared just in time for us to have the cook out outside. Following dinner, the DJ brought good beats that everyone was able to grove to and get the last of their energy out.

Along with the dancing was the inflatable bungie run. The bungie run was an absolute hoot as campers and staff found partners to see who could run the furthest without being sprung back by the giant bungie connected to their waste. To make a good time better, the evening was enhanced by Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

After an evening of goofing off and tasty treats, everyone packed up the rest of their belongings and got organized before bed so tomorrow we can get some biking, swimming and game time in before getting picked up by parents.

It has been a great two weeks of camp! I have had a blast and enjoyed working with every one of the campers! Thank  you to all the parents for supporting your children and encouraging them to push themselves to be outstanding athletes. SDSC is such a great way to learn about their bodies, condition them for a great season and do so while having fun!

Special thanks to Danny and Matt for welcoming me to the SDSC team. They are great guys with a true passion for ski racing and do an amazing job with the kids and staff. They produce such a beneficial yet fun atmosphere. I hope to be able to work with both of them in the future.

Have a great winter everyone! I hope to see ya on the slopes!

Friday - Rain Rain Rain

We never let a little rain slow us down here at SDCS. After a really productive session inside this morning with Greg Hardy we prepared for our screening session this afternoon without a hitch even though we were inside.

Each week at camp we like to take a look at the U12 and older campers so that we can evaluate them and help guide their conditioning programs as they return home and prepare for ski season. We changed up our protocol some from years past as the Eastern Region and academies have started to look at different aspects of young athletes as a determinate of their abilities.

This week we had the campers run through a series of screenings: Box Jumps, Sit and Reach, 5x2 leg jump, and plank (for time). We also added a video of each camper performing a squat and squat jump so that they can see what their movement pattern looks like and compare it to that of Danny's. As you will all see when you receive the testing data, we feel that there is a lot of valuable information that we get out of this session that can help progress your camper in their conditioning.

The younger groups were lucky to hang out with Danny and Chrissy this afternoon, they were all wiped out from a pretty intense workout this morning so they watched a movie and took a trip down to Lackey's. We pay a lot of attention to the volume of activity each age group does during the week, and in hopes of keeping exercise and conditioning fun we tailor the sessions for ample rest and a strong balance of fun and education.

The kids are getting showered up and ready for the DJ to come and play some music and enjoy the last night here at camp.

Thanks so much!!!

Explosion with Greg Hardy

This morning Greg Hardy from Killington Mountain School joined us to lead a session on explosion.  Greg grew up skiing at Stratton, and through Stratton Mountain School he made the US Ski Team.  At one point, he was ranked 9th in the US in Slalom and 18th in GS, qualifying for a 2003 World Cup start at Schladming, Austria, the famous night slalom.  After two years on the USST, he went to work on his college degree at UVM and won an NCAA National Championship in the GS in 2005.  Now at KMS, he had great motivation and messages for the kids today.

Despite the rain, Greg still had the camp working outside for a little bit warming up and sprinting.  His message on weather is that it is something that you cannot control, and we are always skiing and competing in adverse weather conditions.  The individual who can mentally master the weather and limit their distractions will have an advantage on race day.

We moved inside for the circuit session, splitting groups and rotating through stations of boxes, med balls, low hurdles, and body weight exercises.  Great focus this morning, and super job by Greg and the counselors keeping the group attentive and working hard, even with the adjustment in our schedule.

Scavenger Hunt and S'mores

Tonight was a lot of fun! We jumped on our bikes and rode down to Top Notch Field to have some friendly competition. After breaking into three groups they were sent out on a scavenger hunt to obtain objects and achieve goals which were judged on creativity and uniqueness.  The results were outstanding with everything from frogs and flowers to human pyramids and pics of everyone in the river with their helmet on.

Following the scavenger hunt, complimented by the beautiful sunset, everyone gathered back at the Round Hearth for s'mores before heading to bed. We have an exciting day ahead of us tomorrow starting with ski yoga for a morning warm up then guest coach Greg Hardy (Killington Mountain School) for a session focused on "Explosion".

Alternate Sesssion - Waterbury State Park

The Waterbury State Park is a great place to take the campers to enjoy some fun in the same and swimming in water that isn't quite as frigid. The park offers an awesome sandy beach with a large area of shallow water for the campers to enjoy. Danny started a huge game of keep away with the soccer ball which lasted a while.

Next on the agenda was a sand castle contest, breaking into teams, they worked as a team to construct the best sand castle, using no other tools but their imagination and hands. It was great to see how the campers have come together as a group and are able to respect each others thoughts and ideas, and put them into production.

We finished up the session with another slip and slide. It was such a hit the other night we figured that we would give it another shot. The park had the perfect spot for it, and plenty of water to use and clean off with. They enjoyed about 30 minutes of slipping and sliding, and then cleaned off in the lake before changing up and heading back to the RH for dinner.

Chrissy has a really exciting night session planned tonight. I will let her fill you all in on what goes down. Danny and I are really excited with how this week has been, for the majority of the group that attended week 1 the campers are getting a very good balance of instructional and education sessions with the time to recover, play, and have fun.

Thanks to you all for checking in.

GS Turn Sequence on Skates

Tyler shot a really great sequence of Danny this morning.
There is a lot we can learn from this photo and apply to our skiing this winter. Although it is not an exact translation from skates to skis, if you focus on body position it can be very beneficial moving into the winter. We worked with the campers today on just that, body awareness, and positioning especially at the top of the turn. Through out the week we have repeatedly asked the campers to work on their basic athletic stance. That position is very powerful and balanced. Starting from the first photo Danny makes a great move back to this strong position, he is square and balanced, his body is in a position that will allow him to react to changes in terrain or snow conditions. His weight is centered over his body and he will be able to pressure his outside ski with room above the gate, which will allow him to bring shape back to the gate, and have his turn done at the gate, rather then below the gate. In the last photo you can see him exiting his turn, releasing in the fall line and making sure his is back in his good square position.

We love talking skiing, Danny and I are always looking of ways to get our campers exposed to the best possible coaching during this camp. Sessions like today at the Stowe Parking lot left the kids with a 2.5 hour session filled with ski racing talk, coaching, and encouragement. It was a pretty special time, and I think a lot of kids were able to benefit a lot from this today.

Thanks,

-M

Morning Instructional

Matt Maloney led this morning's session on skates.  For those of you new to this blog, Matt has been coaching skiing since he graduated college seven years ago.  Two years ago I was fortunate enough to have him coach with me at Colby, and last year he was a ski technician with the US Ski Team, working with the Europa Cup Men's Team.

After a lengthy warm up (camp was rewarded for a quiet night with a little more sleep), Matt set SL, GS, and SG courses for the kids to work through.  Coaches were spread out, consistently offering suggestions and immediately
getting results.  Skating is one of those things that people dont do very often, so the improvement after 2 weeks for most has been phenomenal.  Linking the positions and movements to skiing is simple in our structure, and the progression to full courses was a very rewarding endeavor.

We did get a quick downpour, where we all hid under the tent for a few minutes.  Once it stopped, and it was deemed safe to return skating, the kids didnt want to stop.  Shout out to Hugh, Claire, PJ, Cassie, Maddy, Bella, Maggie, and Sebastian.  We basically had to take their skates off of them because they didnt want to end.

Hopefully the rain holds off for this afternoon.
Thanks, Danny

Hump day (wednesday) Relax and Recharge

It was an absolutely beautiful day today! After the morning hike and then the hike to and from the falls for a refreshing dip, the campers were ready for a break. Tonight's event was perfect. Dinner was yummy and followed by make your own ice cream sundaes!

Following dinner, everyone sprawled out on the front lawn with sleeping bags and pillows to enjoy a movie on the large screen. The movie was "Wreck It Ralph". This movie was comical and fun but had a great message about being proud of who you are. To make the night even better the movie was complimented by homemade popcorn.

Bingham Falls: a well deserved chill

Bingham Falls was our afternoon destination for some jumps, flips, and dives into the super chilly water.  Before we departed, Matt covered cold water submersion as a form of recovery, and why spending time in the water at Bingham was going to help their sore, sore legs.  We all got pretty beat up on that hike.  It was intense and challenging, but the rewards put an exclamation point on the effort.

When we got back, the staff felt we hadn't gotten enough game time in this week, so we shot over to the Top Notch Field for a few games of speedball and Quebec Ball.  Instead of a soccer ball, we introduced a rugby ball into the mix, creating some strange hops and bounces.  It added a new dimension and made the kids reactive as opposed to anticipating the movement of the ball.  Cool twist.

Outdoor movie tonight!!
See you tomorrow
Danny

Mount Mansfield

We awoke to a beautiful morning with sunny skies and a slight breeze, pretty much perfect weather for hiking. The hike up Mount Mansfield is one of our favorite activities of the week, it provides the campers with a different type of session that combines all the areas we focus on during our sessions: balance, agility, speed, and explosion. It also offers many different "summits" as I like to say so each group has a goal of  where they will reach, all the of them with spectacular views.

The hike is challenging, and in parts steep, but the campers did a great job with applying everything we have worked on and talked about while at camp. The older groups were able to reach the very top of the mountain, and enjoyed amazing views of Stowe valley. While the younger groups worked hard and reached some pretty amazing views as well.

Danny took the older campers and really challenged them to work hard, and they pushed themselves and turned many of the flatter sections of the hike into a trail run. Fun was had by all and the experience and sense of accomplishment everyone got from reaching their own "Everest" was rewarding for our staff. Lots of smiles, laughs, and good times. Oh yeah and I bet lots of sore legs tomorrow!

We just ate a great lunch, and will relax for a bit before we hike down into Bingham Falls for swimming and to learn about the benefits of cold water submersion and how it can help our muscles recover faster. I am sure we will need it, I know I am looking forward to it.

We are rocking and rolling this week, having a blast and learning so much.

Thanks,

-M

Night Activity: The Swimming Hole

While the major focus of a camp like SDSC is sport specific instruction and education, we pride ourselves on maintaining a high level of character development as well as teaching in a way that incorporates a great degree of fun.  Yesterday, we had an instructional session on skates, an alternate training session on bikes, and a playful evening on the slip and slide.  Today, we had a great instructional session this morning with a focus on balance, an alternate training session this afternoon back on skates in the skate park where the campers were able to practice and improve their balance as well as their courage, and tonight we hit the diving board and water slide at The Swimming Hole

While the kids were focusing on their jumps, cannon balls, flips, and slides, I was pleased that their bodies were getting great recovery at the same time.  Water sessions are fantastic alternates to workouts and aid in recovery due to many factors, but mainly its the slower movement under water and the weightlessness that gives their muscles and bones a break as they continue length of motion.  The only thing better tonight would have been if the water was COLDER to aid in recovery, but we'll get in the river tomorrow and make up for it.

A hike to the top of Mount Mansfield awaits us in the morning and a dip at Bingham falls for the afternoon.  The kids are working hard and learning a lot.  Great start to the week.

Thanks, Danny

Johnson Skate Park - Part 2

This afternoon the group headed over to Johnson Skate Park to take another shot at challenging themselves on skates. The skate park is a great place for the campers to work on balance, but also push their limits in a controlled environment all under the watchfulness and encouragement of our staff.

The "M" was a big challenge accomplished by many today!

Thanks to the town of Johnson and the people who maintain the skate park for providing us with this space. We are fortunate to be able to head over there and experience new terrain. It was great day and lots of fun, I will share a few videos that will capture the essence much better.

Getting ready for dinner here at the Round Hearth and then off to the Swimming Hole for some water slide and diving board fun!

Thanks for reading.

Day 3 - Balance

This morning we were joined by Trevor Leafe as the featured coach who ran the Balance session.
Originally from northern New Hampshire, Trevor is a Burke Mountain Academy and Dartmouth College graduate.  Last year he returned to Burke to serve as an athlete-coach, coaching the FIS level men and competing on the Nor-AM circuit.  At one point in his racing career, he was ranked in the top 40 in all disciplines in the US, including 25th in GS and 24th in DH.

Using a circuit, each group worked on a myriad of exercises including dyna disc squats, single leg med ball throws, single leg jumps, squat cone drills, and many other things to get them off balance.  I knew it was a good session when I asked the group what their favorite station was and all six were named right off the bat.  The really cool thing about what we did this morning was that every piece of equipment we used this morning was inexpensive and the kids could all have their own at home to continue these exercises.  The dyna disc was a favorite, and here is where I picked mine up for Colby http://www.power-systems.com/p-2411-versadisc-pro.aspx but they are as low as $22 on amazon.

Great morning, now back to the skate park this afternoon.

An Alternate Evening

We had originally planned to explore the Percy Farm corn maze tonight, however the corn has not grown to height due to the excessively wet soil conditions. The alternative proved to be an equally fun event.

The kids were brought down to the field in swimsuits  unknowing of the activity to come. Led to the river as a distraction with a team building activity to bring a pail of water back without letting anyones hand disconnect from the bucket. They found themselves pleasantly surprised by a 100ft homemade slip and slide. The winners of the team building activity got first slides and everyone else followed with smiles and suds galore.

The slippery sliding was a blast and lasted until the sun was setting behind the mountains and half of the campers rose to the challenge of one last dunk in the river before returning to the Round Hearth for hot showers and time to unwind before bed.  It was a very exciting and cleansing end to a great day of skating and mountain biking.

Monday Afternoon, A Lot of Biking, A Little Water

This afternoon the teams took to the rec path en route to the Stowe single tracks.  The climb up was extremely challenging, but the ride down was so rewarding.  We came across very technical sections with roots and rocks and logs, and even some narrow bridges to work across.  The test of balance, coordination, and focus was at an all time high, and our campers met it head on.  Coming down the Bear trail there were some sweet cruising sections where the campers had to pick their own line around or over small rocks and roots while gauging speed.  We may even have some future pros in our midst.  The groups finished the afternoon in the river, a resourceful destination after a hard day of work.

Great start to camp this week.  We look forward to our first guest coach tomorrow morning with a focus on Balance.  Stay tuned!

Day 2 - Basic Athletic Stance on Skates

We awoke to chilly weather and a strong breeze, but hey we are ski racers right so we packed up the skates and headed to the Stowe Lot for a instructional session with Danny.

Just like all the sessions we started off with a great dynamic warmup, this is a great way to get the campers moving, warm, and engaged in the morning. Once again we went through the process of basic athletic stance: feet, ankles, knees, hips, spine angle, and hands. The campers did a great job with this, and were focused and willing to work on making this position very comfortable and familiar.

Great body position while jumping
Danny addressed the group and spoke about the importance of mastering a skill. Although we had done this many times, we still need to be better and can always improve. He spoke about his own athletic career and that of his athletes at Colby about the importance of a great routine before they get started with their on hill session. Whether it is a free-ski, training, or a race each day these young athletes should go through a progress that helps them find their balance, get comfortable on their skis, and with the conditions.

This short talk really showed in the next part of the morning. We moved through the same drills that we had done both Monday and Friday last week and the improvement was phenomenal. The campers that joined up with us for the second week, worked very hard, and were presented with numerous examples of strong body positions and they too caught on quick and found some success.

Our last segment of the morning was body position through out the turn. We slowed down the speeds and focused the campers on their body position, especially feet and upper body. We looked for a good stance width, with good ankle flex and a square upper body. We broke down the parts of the turn and explained the process to them. We were able to get across how important the position we talked about so much is in ski racing, and especially at the top of the turn. Our staff did a great job working with camper and helping them not only get in a good position but understand how it will lead to success in ski racing.

SDSC 2 Hits the Ground Running!

Week 2 kicked off this afternoon.  With a smaller camp size, there will be a little more flexibility with the activities, but we still expect the same high caliber effort from our campers, as well as our coaches.

Tonight we broke the ice with introductions and team building exercises.  Last week we structured the camp to have 5 teams of 10-12, but this week we are aiming a touch smaller with 6 groups of 5-6.  It will allow for the coaches and counselors to lead a different group each session, and it gives me the flexibility to pair two or three teams together at a time for larger group activities.  Donning some new flags and new colors to brighten things up, our teams are representing Spain, New Zealand, USA, Finland, Brazil, and Argentina.

After dinner we played some new and interesting field games such as blanket volleyball (just like it sounds), aardvark relay (teams transfer peas from one bowl to another using only straws), and human rock, paper, scissors (as life size as it gets).  Pretty cool games that were first timers here at SDSC.

Breaking up the night session, we took turns heading up to Foster's Swimming Hole to jump some rocks and take a plunge.  The water was freezing, and we were in and out of rain all day, but some of our kids never miss a chance to get in the water.  Big shout outs to Maddy, Cassie, Lindsey, Maggie, Alex, Dylan, Austin, Nick, Andrew, Steven, Bella, and Hugh for braving the water.  Isabelle and I felt the rush too and joined in on the jump.

Big day ahead tomorrow as we get on skates in the parking lot right off the bat.  Stay tuned!

Last Night- DJ Dance Party

Our last full day was complimented by another one of Round House's yummy meals  in the form of a cook out. Following the final afternoon of swimming and games or athletic testing came a fun filled evening.

With a DJ on site the kids danced their hearts out, when they were not bouncing on the inflatable or playing inflatable jousting.  To make the evening even better, we had Ben and Jerry's ice cream (best in Vermont).  After bouncing, dancing, giggling, and eating everyone retreated to their rooms to pack up or organize for the week to come.

It has been a great week and the campers have worked hard, learned a lot and definitely improved.  I have had a blast working with every one of the kids as well as the outstanding staff we have had this year.  Special thanks to Danny and Matt as they have been a great influence and mentors to me during my first year at this phenomenal camp. I would like to also give a special thanks to Tyler for documenting the week through his pictures and videos which has visually given life to this blog.

Most importantly I would like to thank the parents of ever on of the kids here for supporting their children and encouraging them to to grow by sending them to this unique Dry Land Ski Camp. We do a great job here but with out loving supportive parents  these children would not be here to expand and strive to reach their full potential.

Morning Session on Skates

With chances of showers all morning we were a bit concerned last night about the safety of the parking lot this morning for skating. As we sat down for breakfast the clouds began to burn off and the sun poked through.

We were greeted with a slightly wet parking lot but the combination of the sun and breeze dried up the pavement by the time we were ready to be on skates. Danny led this morning's session which built on our skate session Monday. During warmup, we touched back on basic athletic stance and body position. Once on skates, we refocused on applying those positions to our skating. The counselors did a great job demonstrating and coaching everyone to be their best. The campers jumped over gates on the ground, then progressed to hurdles of different heights. We spent a good amount of time on body position while turning.

We ended the session with the annual SL challenge, which was a blast! Upon return to the Round Hearth we enjoyed another amazing lunch and were greeted by Jerry Murphy of Swix. Jerry has been coming to camp every year for a long time. He has a passion for skiing and young athletes and works with Swix on educating them on proper care of their skis. The sessions are always great, and the kids once again were engaged and asked some awesome questions. Things are running smoothly, the kids are working hard and having fun.

It is important to mention too that all of these great blog posts, coaches, and guests have been the hard work and vision of Danny over the last 8 years. The quality of the staff speaks so strongly for his reputation and passion for the sport of ski racing. I want to take a second to thank him as well for letting me be part of something this special, and giving me the freedom to bring so many of my ideas to the table. A great mentor, coach, friend, and father. Thanks so much Danny from all of us!

Indoor Movie - Relaxing Recharge

As the rain continued and the front lawn grew sloppy puddles, the movie was moved inside. A relaxing evening was just what everyone needed, as the discussion with Chad Couto (Snowflake Inn) had emphasized the importance of not only nutrition but the value of rest in obtaining optimal energy and endurance.  Exhausted from the active week thus far, everyone sprawled out to watch "Escape From Plant Earth" with popcorn as a healthy snack.

An Alternate... Alternate Afternoon Session

With the threat of rain and possible storms Danny and I were forced to make a tough decision during lunch on whether or not to try and get in our hike up Mt. Mansfield this afternoon. We always look at safety first and with close to 70 people on the mountain we decided that the hike would not prove as the safest option for the afternoon. It didn't take to long for us to come up with another idea.

The staff at the Swimming Hole was great enough to pull in some extra life guards on short notice and we were able to get all of the campers over to enjoy their amazing facility. The campers enjoyed the Olympic sized pool, diving board, and water slide. The counselors even got in on the action and jumped off the diving board during a pretty funny cannonball contest. Fun was had by all and we were greeted by rain when we were leaving so we felt confident we made the right call.

After dinner we were joined by Chad Couto, the fitness director of The Stoweflake Resort, for a discussion on nutrition and fitness. We were impressed with not only the manner the information was delivered, but also how it was received. These kids are smart, and reinforced that they take things away from every opportunity that we provide here at SDSC.

Outdoor movie night switches to indoor movie night. It looks like we're about to have a big slumber party!

Thanks,

-M

Day 5 Morning Session - Speed

Good Afternoon,

Jamie Wylie, Head Women's Coach at Stratton Mountain School joined us for a speed session down on the Top Notch Fields. It was the 3rd year that Jamie came over, and every year she continues to impress Danny and I with her new workouts and knowledge. The campers were run through a great warmup focusing on mobility, then a workout specific warmup that she used as her teaching tool to explain the breakdown of speed.

Jamie Wylie - Stratton Mountain School
Much of the session focused on running form and working as hard as they could for each short sprint. We then broke into smaller short sided games of SpeedBall and applied the tactics we had practiced into a game. Jamie believes very strongly in fun and games, and that each young camper should be exposed to the thought of "playing". This value parallels the philosophy that Danny and I share and is one of the many reason why she is a great fit for camp.

Jamie used this camper as a great example of speed!
She closed the session with a cool down, stretch, and a Q&A on rest, nutrition, and the difference between soreness from activity and injuries. The campers had some great questions and learned a lot from her session, we thank Jamie so much for taking her time to visit with us today.

Due to the threat of approaching rain, we have decided to plan an alternate afternoon session other then the hike, we will be taking the camp to the Swimming Hole in Stowe to get in the pool, hit the water slide, and jump off the diving board. Maybe we will get the hike in at a later date, because it is such a great time.

Till the afternoon,

-M

Camp Videos and Photos

Here at Stowe Dryland Ski Camp we take pride in not only the curriculum we have developed for our campers but also the growth and development of our staff. Danny and I expect so much from our staff and every year they do not disappoint. Their work ethic, passion for skiing, and love of helping young athletes achieve their goals comes from within, but the time and effort Danny and I put in to offer up our guidance creates a great product. It is so rewarding to see these college aged athletes grow in just one week working with your children.

One particular position that I feel has a huge impact on our success is our Media position. Three years ago we developed this position because our camp DVD was such a hit with the kids, and we knew that there were young filmers and photographers looking to build portfolios, shoot different subjects, and learn the responsibly of working for someone. This position is a non-paid internship, but he or she will be able to earn money to help cover the cost of their upcoming ski season, college, or film equipment to learn more about their craft by selling copies of the camp DVD and digital copies of the photographs from the week.

We are fortunate this summer to have Tyler Foulkes back again. For those of you that are new to camp Tyler is a Nordic Skier who this spring graduated from Stratton Mountain School. He will be attending Montana State this fall, and will declare film and production as his major. While at SMS Tyler and a friend started their own company, Revived Films, and produced a full length feature film last winter about the sport of Nordic Skiing. Tyler's passion for film is amazing, he work with the camera, interaction with his subjects, and his unbelievable vision and talent with editing software has helped us capture what camp means to all of us. Here is a short edit of camp so far so you can get a glimpse of his work.

Tyler will be offering the sale of both his DVD and his photos on the last day of both weeks of camp. You can pre-order your DVD by using the PayPal button below.

DVD Video  of both Weeks 1 and 2: $15.00
High Res Digital Copy of Photos: $10.00 (per photo)

Tyler will be excepting cash, check, or credit cards through his company's Pay Pal account on Saturday or via the web, he can run CC cards here with his iPhone as well.

You can view all the photos from camp on his Imgur Account here: Tyler's Imgur.
You can purchase photos using the Pay Pal button above the DVD button below. Please note the title of the image/images you would like to purchase in the text box of the "add to cart" button. Then change the quantity to reflect the number of photos you wish to purchase.
Image Number/Numbers
Camp DVD

We figured with a digital copy of the photo you could print your own copies, email them to a place like Walmart, or a specialty store and get a poster size image. This will work the best for both you guys and Tyler.

His profit this week will help fund his first year of film school and we are already making sure he will be back next summer so the DVD will be even that much better!!!

Thanks so much,

-M
